Hundertwasser designed the Koru flag in 1983 when he became a citizen, as a gift to New Zealand. He proposed it as a secondary flag for New Zealand, rather than as a replacement for the existing flag. Hundertwasser once said that as soon as he saw how the spiral patterns in his paintings resembled Maori carvings and tattoos, he knew that he had always been a New Zealander.
Hundertwasser's comment on the work
The flag points in two directions, one against the wind and the enemy, which is sharp like a hatchet, the masculine one; and protected by it is one to leeward, with the wind, a feminine one, which is the opposite, opening and unfolding delicately. The flag is conceived as an indigenous flag and is not intended to replace the official ensign of New Zealand.
