Designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1983 as a gift to New Zealand, the Koru Flag was proposed as a secondary flag for New Zealand rather than a replacement for the existing national flag.
Hundertwasser was inspired by the similarities he recognised between the spiral forms in his own artwork and the patterns found in Māori carvings and tā moko. He famously said that when he discovered these connections, he knew he had always been a New Zealander.
Hundertwasser’s Comment on the Work
“The flag points in two directions, one against the wind and the enemy, which is sharp like a hatchet, the masculine one; and protected by it is one to leeward, with the wind, a feminine one, which is the opposite, opening and unfolding delicately.”
Hundertwasser conceived the flag as an indigenous flag and did not intend it to replace the official ensign of New Zealand. From: Hundertwasser 1928–2000, Catalogue Raisonné, Vol. 2, Taschen, Cologne, 2002, p. 1055.
