"I'll Be The One Wearing The Pink Carnation, Standing In The Corner (Sweating)" by Wayne Youle (Ngati Whakaeke, Ngapuhi).

This is an image of the piece featured in the exhibition Te Moteatea a Maumahara (10th August - 24 November 2024).

This piece reflects Youle's childhood desrire to hide his identity while remaining present, a sentiment stemming from his experiences growing up as a white-passing boy of Maori and Pakeha heritage in Titahi Bay during hte 1970's and 1980's. The Artwork encapsulates his struggle to fit in and his effforts to assert his Maori identity amidst cultural scrutiny and division. By using humour and word play, Youle navigated these tensions, which has become a hallmakr of his style.
