This catalogue accompanies the 5th exhibition at the Wairau Maori Art Gallery, held from 14 July 2023 – 31 March 2024. It features Lisa Reihana’s captivating installation He Wai Ngunguru – Nomads of the Sea (2019), a work that interweaves fact and fiction to explore the complex social dynamics of 19th-century New Zealand.

Through the enigmatic character of the Storyteller — who shifts seamlessly between masculine and feminine voices — the audience meets Charlotte Badger, a Pakeha settler woman who defies societal norms through mutiny, and Puhi, a proud wahine of Nga Puhi descent whose jealousy is sparked by Charlotte’s growing influence.
