Wai means water in Te Reo Māori, and Waitī is the star connected to fresh water and the many creatures living in rivers, streams, and lakes—especially the korokoro (native fish). The engraved pattern on the blue Perspex represents the hīnaki (eel trap) with tuna (eel) inside, symbolising the life-giving relationship between water and its inhabitants.
