In How My Koro Became a Star, a young boy learns about the customs and traditions of celebrating Matariki from his grandfather. Together, they watch the stars from the top of a mountain, prepare food offerings for the gods, and honour Te Waka o Rangi, calling out the names of loved ones who have passed so they may become stars.

Just before Matariki the following year, the boy’s Koro dies. Guided by what he learned, he gathers the food offering and invites his family to join him on the mountain. Initially hesitant, they eventually follow the rituals taught by Koro, calling out his name so he can take his place among the stars. This heartfelt story beautifully captures Maori customs, intergenerational learning, and the enduring power of love and remembrance.
