Matariki – The Maori New Year – Libby Hakaraia

An introduction to Matariki, the Maori New Year, and the star cluster also known in other cultures as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. Matariki marked the beginning of the Maori calendar, guiding planting and harvesting, and was studied by tohunga as an omen for the year ahead.

Libby Hakaraia draws on interviews with astronomers Richard Hall and Vicki Hyde, renowned navigator Hekenukumai Busby, and Hapimana Rikihana, a practitioner of the ancient Maori art of mahi whai (string patterns). Libby Hakaraia is a respected radio and television presenter and producer, and lives in Kerikeri with her partner, award-winning poet Glenn Colquhoun, and their child, Olive.
