Hundertwasser comment about the work:
"I painted the picture in Morocco, with earthen colours, for the soil is red there. I dreamed about St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna while painting it. But I was in Fez and saw how green the tiles of the roofs were. That got me to dreaming even then that you can put greenery on roofs. The painted green roof tiles are a symbol of roof greenery. So it's a Moroccan Gothic church with African materials. (From: Hundertwasser Architecture, Cologne, 1997, p. 12) In Morocco, where the soil is red, the roof tiles of green ceramic and the walls of red earth, I thought of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Thus, an African cathedral came to be."
